It was tough for me to counsel Bosun, a young lawyer widowed at the age of 36. Now 39 years old and it was obvious her life ended when her husband died in a ghastly motor accident. She confided in me that the only reason she gets up each morning is because of her 6 year old daughter.
“God knows best”, I stuttered as I looked for the right words to console Bosun.
“Hmm”, she sighed. “I have heard those words countless times and I wonder why I don’t feel better” she mused…obviously locked in her grief.
I went on quoting suitable scriptures and at the end of it, Bosun concluded the meeting with a simple sentence.. “Pastor Bisi, ko le ye yin” (Pastor Bisi, you can’t understand)
Those words TAUNTED and HAUNTED me for days because all I could see was the wistful look on Bosun’s lovely face as I ‘tried’ to counsel her.
Yes Bisi, you can’t understand the loss.
Yes Bisi, you can’t understand the loneliness.
Yes Bisi, you can’t understand the alienation… can’t fit into some circles anymore.
Yes Bisi, you can’t understand the shattered dreams.
Yes Bisi, what about the financial burden… you can’t understand.
The list is just so endless… we all don’t get it…
Yes, sympathy and speaking ‘Christianese’ is just not enough when counselling some people because they need people who have walked in their shoes to empathise with them.
Please pause and look around you, there are many hurting Gals (ladies) out there who feel ‘you can’t understand’.
They will feel better if they can just connect with someone who has triumphed in the area they are presently challenged.
My practical style of teaching seemed to have failed as I couldn’t talk so much on these issues…
Since I am one who believes in the Emphasising Individual Responsibility, I asked ‘Moi’, what can I do to assuage the hurt?
G.A.L.
